A Gift That Will Make Mothers More Comfortable!

Dear Friends,
I hope you are enjoying beautiful spring weather wherever you might be. It is so nice to see the sun shining and landscape turn green here in New York! Mother's Day is right around the corner, and in celebration of mothers everywhere we will be donating 20% of all profits from now through May 8th to Hamlin Fistula USA. This is our third year donating a portion of proceeds from Mother's Day sales to Hamlin Fistula USA and they do truly remarkable work- just last month Nicholas Kristof wrote this op-ed "The World's Modern-Day Lepers: Women With Fistulas".
Hamlin Fistula USA supports the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital and Hamlin College for Midwifery. Dr. Catherine Hamlin, who founded the hospital with her husband in 1974, has provided free surgeries for over 40,000 women and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. Located in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, it is dedicated exclusively to women with obstetric fistula, and is funded entirely by donations. It is the only hospital of its kind in the world.
Largely eradicated in the "developed" world at the end of the 19th century when caesarean section became widely available, obstetric fistula continues to plague women throughout the developing world. It is estimated that there are 100,000 new fistula cases each year, but the capacity to treat fistula is only around 6,500 per year. The United Nations Population fund (UNFPA) estimates the world's population of fistula sufferers at more than two million.

Happy Spring! xo Liz
